You Will Need:
  • plastic apples OR red/green balls

Roll apples with a child.

  • Sit facing a child and roll a plastic apple to her. Encourage her to roll it back.
  • Say the rhyme "Roll the Apple" as you continue to roll the apple or ball back and forth. Play as long as the child is enjoying the game.
Roll the Apple

Roll the apple, roll the apple,
Fiddle-dee-dee.
Roll the apple, roll the apple,
Roll to me.

Roll the apple, roll the apple,
Fiddle-dee-doo.
Roll the apple, roll the apple,
Back to you.
  • Repeat with each child.


Older Toddlers: Change the word roll to toss. Toss the apple or ball back and forth.

Observe: Do the children enjoy playing games like this one with you? What other types of connections do they show and during what times of the day? Are there other familiar adults the children seek out? Whom?
