You Will Need:
  • All About Me - I feel sleepy (see Resources)
  • Emotions Cards (see Resources)
  • Sleep Sign Language Card (see Resources)

Learn about signs that show we feel sleepy and tired.

  • Bring out the All About Me Card labeled "I feel sleepy" (see Resources).
  • Show the card and talk about what is happening. The child is yawning. Briefly discuss how people yawn when they are feeling sleepy.
  • Yawn for the children and then have them try.
  • Next, bring out the Emotions Card labeled "Tired" (see Resources). Compare the two pictures. Talk about how the child is rubbing his eyes. Sometimes people rub their eyes when they are tired or sleepy.
  • Consider displaying the two pictures in your rest area, so the children have more exposure to the emotion of feeling sleepy/tired.
  • When you see children yawning or rubbing their eyes, draw attention to the pictures and talk about the emotion. Introduce the sign for sleep as the children prepare for rest time. Refer to the Sign Language Card for help with making the sign (see Resources).
  • Help the children notice how their peers feel when they are tired. Offer some suggestions for ways they could help their peers when they notice this feeling, e.g., "Yes, Abigail, I see that Liam is feeling tired. Do you think we should see if he wants his blanket?"

Observe: Do the children begin to notice when other children are feeling tired? How do they show concern or try to help their peers? When you offer a suggestion, notice if they follow through with the idea or come up with a different one. Watch to see which older children begin to develop awareness of their natural body rhythm of tiredness. How do they express this awareness?
