Sing a classic snowman song!
- Lead the children in singing "Frosty the Snowman." Encourage children to clap, stomp, or dance to the song.
Frosty the SnowmanTraditionalFrosty the snowmanWas a jolly happy soul. With a corncob pipe and a button noseAnd two eyes made out of coal.Frosty the snowmanIs a fairy tale they say.He was made of snow, but the children knowHow he came to life one day. There must have been some magicIn that old silk hat they found. For when they placed it on his head,He began to dance around!Oh, Frosty the snowmanWas alive as he could be.And the children say he could laugh and playJust the same as you and me.Thumpety thump thump,Thumpety thump thump.Look at Frosty go!Thumpety thump thump,Thumpety thump thump.Over the hills of snow!- If the children enjoy the song, you can repeat it a few times. Another option would be to play the song on a digital device. There is a version of the song on the Sparkles and Shivers Spotify playlist (see Related Activities).
Observe: Do the children enjoy the song? Play the song often so children can further explore sounds, rhyming words, and rhythm.
Note: Caution: Always check for allergies before serving foods. Talk with families to learn the schedule each child's doctor recommends for introducing new foods.
Extend snowmen activities by serving a warm, delicious treat and a cup of cold milk. Have children wash their hands. Talk about the importance of washing your hands, or sing your favorite handwashing song. Divide the sugar cookie dough into balls. Give each child a ball of dough. Allow children to flatten the balls on a cookie sheet to make a circle. How does the dough feel? Is it hot or cold? Is it hard or soft? Offer the chocolate chips and candies to embellish the cookie dough. Encourage children to add two chocolate chips for eyes, an orange M&M for the nose, and mini chocolate chips or M&M's for a mouth. They may also place the chocolate chips and M&M's in different ways or make patterns. Encourage their ideas and creativity. Bake according to the directions on the package. Allow to cool, but plan to serve when they are still slightly warm. Enjoy with cups of cold milk. Talk with children about whether cookies are treats or healthy foods. Explain that it's nice to enjoy an occasional treat together!
