Play loud and quiet drums in the drumming series.
- In January/February, the children focused on playing a fast and slow drum (see Related Activities). Start today by offering each child a drum and practicing what was learned in the previous curriculum, from September to February (see Related Activities).
- Then, focus on introducing the words loud and quiet as you drum together.
- Show the children how to play the drum loud. You might do several loud beats or show a single loud drum. Then raise your hands to stop. Demonstrate how to play your drum quiet. You might barely tap the drum multiple times in a row or tap it once quietly.
- Practice loud/quiet drumming with the children.
- Then, go around the circle and ask each child if they would like to drum loud or quiet. Play as a group based on each child's choice. Be sure each child has a turn.
- To add to the fun, you might ask the children if they want to play or wake up their drum like a loud bear or a quiet mouse.
- As the children listen to choices that are made and play their drums based on those choices, they will build connections between their brain and muscle movements. This is also a great hands-on learning opportunity for the introduction of another opposite concept.
Observe: Notice each child's control and self-regulation as they play the drums quietly and loudly. Are they able to control their beats to play quiet drums? Notice in which other daily activities and routines the children are showing self-regulation skills.
