You Will Need:
  • Little Caterpillar by Igloo Books

Introduce caterpillars and butterflies with the Little Caterpillar book.

  • Read the Little Caterpillar book.
  • As you read, the children will learn about the life cycle of a caterpillar and how it grows into a butterfly. Draw attention to the egg, plants, caterpillars, and butterflies in the book.
  • At the end of the book, you will see a page that summarizes the life cycle of a caterpillar. When you're finished reading the story, review this information with the children as you move your finger around the circle diagram.
  • This book also flows with the use of rhyming words. Notice if the children begin to recognize the pattern of rhyming words as they become familiar with the book through repeated readings.

Observe: Do the children listen to the book and show understanding of the words and images? Provide examples of a few rhyming words in the book and invite children to repeat them. Can older children think of a few rhyming words on their own?
