- finger paints
- paintbrushes
- black permanent marker (teacher use)
Paint rocks with positive and inspiring messages on them.
- Before the activity, gather several large rocks.
- Set out the rocks, finger paints, and paintbrushes.
- Invite the children to paint the rocks. Let dry.
- Use a black permanent marker to write positive messages on the rocks. The children might have some ideas for words to use, e.g., "Be Happy," "Smile," or "Love."
- Once the rocks are complete, hide them throughout your outdoor area for the children to find. If you are in a center setting, children from other rooms will enjoy finding them also.
- Another option would be to place a few in your outdoor area and hide the rest in a nearby park. Talk about how others will feel when they find the rocks while playing.
Observe: Notice how the children react to painting the rocks. Do they enjoy painting unique objects such as rocks? Observe if they use the paintbrushes or their fingers to paint. What other types of art or creating do the children enjoy participating in?
