You Will Need:
  • Watermelon Seed Counting Early Learning Materials (see Resources)
  • paper
  • marker (teacher use)

Practice counting with watermelon slices and seeds.

  • Bring out the Watermelon Seed Counting Early Learning Materials, making sure each card is cut apart (see Resources).
  • Sit with a child and show the cards. Give the child time to explore the cards.
  • Show the watermelon slice with no seeds. Talk about the card. Point out there are zero seeds.
  • Repeat with the other cards, counting the seeds. Encourage the child to count with you as interested.


Older Toddlers: Bring out six pieces of paper. Label the pieces with the numbers 0 to 6. Have older toddlers who are showing number recognition place the cards on the corresponding written number after counting the seeds with you. This should be reserved for your oldest children who that have shown number recognition previously.
