Resources: color and Shape Display: Green/Brown Star 2016, Playful Monkey Color and Shape Display

You Will Need:
  • Playful Monkey Color and Shape Display (see Resources)
  • Brown Star Display (see Resources)
  • scissors

If you have not done so, print, cut out, and assemble the Playful Monkey Color and Shape Display (see Resources). Display it as shown where the children can see it. When you see the children showing interest in the display, remind them that the monkey loves to play. He especially loves to play with shapes! Print and cut out the brown star (see Resources), and use a loop of masking tape to attach the star. If the circles from September and October are in place, you may stack the star above a circle, or you may remove the circles. Lead the song below.

Sung to "Skip to My Lou"
The monkey found a shape, and said, "Hurray!
I found a star, and I can play!"
He played with the brown star every day.
The monkey had such fun.

Brown, brown, it is brown!
Brown, brown, it is brown!
Brown, brown, it is brown!
The star he found is brown.

Point to the brown star and name the color and shape. Help the children notice that the monkey is brown too! If you like, share the Spanish words café (kah-FEH) for brown and estrella (ehs-STREH-yah) for star. Encourage children to repeat the words as they show readiness. Point out that the brown star has five points. Touch each point as you count aloud. Help children remember places they have seen stars, such as on an American flag.

Older Toddlers
Move around the room with the children and look for the star shape and the color brown.
