Resources: Stick Puppet: Butterfly

You Will Need:
  • Butterfly Stick Puppet (see Resources)

As you begin a new month and theme, introduce a new friend— Bonnie Butterfly!

  • Introduce Bonnie Butterfly (see Resources) to the children.

  • Explain that butterflies, like Bonnie, do not have teeth to chew food. They can only drink liquids. Explain that many flowers have a juice called nectar. Butterflies drink the nectar.

  • Ask the children if they have favorite colors. After they respond, explain that butterflies have favorite colors too! They prefer flowers that are purple, orange, yellow, red, or pink.

  • Sing the song "Bonnie Butterfly" below. As you sing, fly Bonnie around. Repeat a few times.

  • Encourage the children to tell Bonnie their names as they show readiness. If children are not ready, you could share their names with Bonnie. For example, "Bonnie, this is Anna."

  • Older Toddlers: Help the children notice and name different body parts on Bonnie. For example, her antennae, head, wings, and eyes.
Bonnie Butterfly
Sung to "The Itsy, Bitsy Spider"

Bonnie is flying, flying all around.
She flies way up high, and then low near the ground.
She needs to find some flowers so she can have a drink.
She likes purple, yellow, orange, red and pink.
