You Will Need:
  • Calendar Grid/Pieces
  • Weather Display/Pieces
  • Letter L Display (see Resources)
  • dry erase marker
  • scissors
  • crayons
  • paper
  • scissors
  • star cutout
  • tape

Greeting/Welcome: Offer scrap pieces of gift wrap paper and scissors, and invite children to snip the paper into confetti pieces while they wait for everyone to arrive. Save the pieces and add them to your art box for future use.

Calendar Time: Fill in the blanks at the top of the Calendar Grid. Place the Calendar Pieces from the weekend and for today on the grid, and say the day, month, and date. What two digits make up today's date?

Weather Observation: Discuss today's weather. Move the clips to the appropriate spots on the sides of the display, and place the corresponding Weather Card on the correct day of the week.
Daily Review: Place a large selection of crayons on a tabletop, and challenge children to work together to find all the shades of green crayons.

Pledge of Allegiance: Say the Pledge of Allegiance together, if desired.

Number, Color, or Shape: Cut a large holiday tree out of green paper and attach to a wall at the children's eye level. Provide one star cutout. Place a loop of removable tape on the back of the star. Have children close their eyes as they take turns pinning the star to the top of the tree!

Alphabet Fun: Show the Letter L Display to the children (see Resources). Point to the upper and lowercase letters. Practice making the /l/ sound. (Model by showing children how your tongue presses against the back of your top teeth. The /l/ sound is a continuous sound, so avoid creating a "luh" or "lah" sound.) Demonstrate the sign language symbol. Ask children, "What letter L item is pictured on the display?"
