Resources: Math Activity Mat: Number Five

You Will Need:
  • Oval Counting Links (Starter Pack)
  • Number Five Math Activity Mat (see Resources)
  • paper
  • writing tools

Print and bring out the Number Five Math Activity Mat and place it on a tabletop (see Resources). Ask children to identify the number. Underline the English and Spanish word for five. Complete the rest of the activity according to the children's skill levels:

Beginning: Place 5 Oval Counting Links on the mat and say "five." Count the links.

Developing: Read the directions on the mat, and invite each child to follow them.

Proficient: Observe the number path together. Ask, "What number is two spaces before five? What number is two spaces after five? How many more spaces are needed to make ten?" Offer paper and writing tools to practice printing 5s.

Leave all of the materials in your math area for independent play.

Observe: Do the children count the links from one to five? Do they associate the number five with adding one to the number four? Model how to add or subtract one or two to the number five. Invite children to count with you.
