You Will Need:
  • playdough
  • scissors

Provide valuable cutting practice with this fine motor activity! Give each child a ball of playdough. Demonstrate how to roll the ball in between your hands and on the table until it creates a long tube-like snake shape. Assist children as needed until their snakes are long and thin.

Show children how to cut the playdough snake into small pieces with scissors. Then, have children roll out each piece to create a smaller snake. Encourage children to continue rolling and cutting until they have several tiny baby snakes.

Observe: Are the children able to engage in the activity and focus on the task of creating playdough snakes? Encourage them to set a goal, such as to create a certain number of playdough snakes. How long do they stay actively engaged in the activity?

Transition: Begin humming a familiar tune, and when children notice, encourage them to join in. Hum a few different songs before starting a new activity.
