PD2.1(3) (More...)You Will Need: Draw six large circles in a row on the sidewalk with chalk. Make the circles large enough that children can easily fit both feet in each circle. Place one large block beside the first circle and two large blocks beside the next one. Continue to alternate the blocks in a pattern of one-two-one-two for the remainder of the circles.
Have a child stand outside the first circle with one large block beside it. Challenge the child to jump into the first circle, land on one foot, and say, "One!" Then, jump into the next circle with two blocks by it, land on both feet, and say, "Two!" The child will continue to hop down the line, alternating on one or two feet, matching the number of blocks by each circle.
Extend: Switch up the pattern of blocks to create different challenges.
Observe: Do the children participate in the activity from start to finish? Can they jump into each circle? Are they able to balance on both sides of the body without falling over? If a child is having difficulty, simplify the activity by having them step into the circle or jump with both feet. Once they can do that, challenge them to jump with both feet, hop on one foot, or follow the block patterns.
